WHY BOOK A SAFARI IN THE GREEN SEASON?

Ah the “green season”…

Travel in November through to April are typically wetter months in most Southern African countries. Some call it the “rainy season”, but that term does it so much disservice. Let’s help put this “unfairness” right, by highlighting just why you SHOULD travel during “green season” in 6 easy reminders 👇

✔️  NEW BORN & FIRST STEPS

As a result of the wetter months and abundance of water, taller grasses and thicker bush, enable predators such as lions, leopards and wild dog to give birth and hide their young during the more dangerous time when they can’t fend for themselves. The first months of the new year can also see zebra, buffalo, wildebeest foals and birds take their first delicate steps and flights towards the many miles they’ll cover over the course of the year.

If you want to see younglings, this is a wonderful opportunity.

✔️  PHOTOGRAPHERS DREAM

Photographers marvel over Africa’s dramatic skies, storm clouds and bursts of light create magic, whilst flowers on the ground and rainfall helping dust off the dry season to create beautifully clean images, making the green season a landscape photographer’s dream. Aside from the plentiful animals of course!

✔️  SUSTAINABLE TRAVEL

Reduce, re-use, recycle. A very simple but great way to help benefit the planet and one of these involves reducing high season travel. Whilst some people are just not able to avoid travelling in high season (typically July-September) and that’s perfectly fine, for those who can mix things up a little, choosing to travel “out of season” in green season, helps lessen over-tourism.

✔️  AFRICA TO YOURSELF (ALMOST!!)

Avoiding high season travel is a great way to travel sustainably, but it’s also a fantastic way to enjoy Africa with fewer tourists. It’s not uncommon for our safaris to give you wildlife all to yourself, as you set out on game drive with your guide with barely no other vehicles around – it’s a glorious opportunity to not only enjoy these experiences, but benefit from true escapism.

✔️  BIRDING HAVEN

Hundreds of birds and migrant bird species from all corners of the northern hemisphere travel to Eastern and Southern Africa during these green season months, making green season a birder’s paradise. Many birds at this time also show off their breeding plumage, as they head for the green pastures, watery landscapes and full rivers, waterholes and lakes.

✔️  AFFORDABLE & AVAILABLE

High season, wherever you travel, will always see higher prices due to the overwhelming demand. So travelling sustainably actually helps your wallet, the green season sees fewer tourists, lower prices and travellers can save up to 70% on high season travel. Safari camps often provide special offers during green season, offer better child prices and solo travellers can happily avoid those niggling single supplements.

Green season is the ideal opportunity to find the right safari for you, a chance to experience Africa in all her glory and at a fantastic price.
