One with Nature at Grootbos Nature Reserve

We often say to travellers that South Africa is awash with experiences, something for everyone and of such wide ranging eclectic variety.

We talk a lot about safari and conservation, so we thought we’d give you guys a break… well… consider this a different type of safari, just as rich in its journey. Which is why Captured In Africa recently visited Gootbos Nature Reserve on South Africa’s ‘whale coast’ and ideally situated near the harbour town of Gansbaai – renowned as being one of the very best places to see ocean life.

In fact, Grootbos is ideally situated for so much more…

What on earth is Grootbos?

Look on Google maps, look anywhere… and you’ll see why this location is special. Just two hours drive from Cape Town and a hours drive from where the warm Indian Ocean and the icy Atlantic meet off the coast of South Africa – close to the southernmost tip of a continent filled to the brim with natural beauty, the warmest people and the most exceptional experiences.

According to Grootbos themselves; “Grootbos Nature Reserve offers you the chance to immerse yourself in the unique fynbos kingdom and ancient forest of Grootbos, featuring 791 plant species, 118 bird species, 29 mammals and 21 amphibians – some of which are under threat of extinction.”

Beauty on your doorstep and a view to wake up early each day for

And boy, do the Activities at Grootbos immerse you in the Environment

Whether it’s spotting whales and their calves in the ocean, learning how bees pollinate flowers or meeting passionate people changing the world, you’ll have your eyes opened – as well as your heart.

Whale watching in this unspoilt natural environment is an almost spiritual experience, which is why people from around the world flock to Walker Bay in the Western Cape every year to do so. Spot Southern Right Whales on either land-based or boat-based excursions or take a flight for a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Grootbos operate their whale watching tours with Dyer Island Cruises – one of the most responsible ocean and wildlife tour providers

Botanical safaris on board an open-top Land Rover, where you’ll learn from our hugely knowledgeable guides about the incredible birds, plants and animals in this floral kingdom. Be still, absorb the world around you and delight afresh in its wonder.

Walks or hikes in and around Grootbos are one of the best ways to truly immerse yourself in the Cape Floral Kingdom, as you breathe the fresh air and drink in the crystal clear views. Take a guided walk or head out yourself as you gaze at bursts of fynbos colour, get some exercise, and return with a clearer head and more restful soul.

Living the Future Tour as you discover how the entire Grootbos experience has been designed around benefitting the community and environment around you. Learn and connect as you witness how our various projects are changing lives and conserving this protected wilderness.

African Penguin & Seabird Sanctuary situated 5 minutes away from Dyer Island Cruises whale watching (and 10 mins away from Grootbos) is a must. A small dedicated rehab unit dealing with injured and orphaned Penguins, the centre primarily aims to re-introduce animals once treated and ready for re-release. Visiting the centre, our team were very impressed with their hands-off approach, with tourists unable to handle the penguins to allow responsible management and ensure human habituation is kept to a minimum.

Other activities available include: scenic flights offering incredible aspects to the landscape and whale watching, bird watching, coastal safari of beaches and caves, beauty treatments and more marine safaris available.

Taking the Grootbos experience to your tastebuds

“the majority of the food at Grootbos is supplied by our own farm.”

It’s a fantastic thing to hear as your food arrives to your dining table, it’s organic and beautifully done and if your tastebuds are working correctly, you’re in for a culinary treat. Match this with your drink of choice, or perhaps one of the superb local wines on offer.

…and you MUST try the Grootbos signature Honey Ice Cream, made on site via the reserve’s own bee keeping project.

The Grootbos Foundation say; “All of our projects are replicable and scalable, with many generating their own income or becoming partially self-sustaining.
