In Search of Lions on Safari
It may be an obvious question and answer, but there are some areas of Southern and Eastern Africa that are simply exceptional for sighting Lions in the wild.
The following is a small selection of exclusive safari camps and locations for experiencing the thrill, the fascination and dream of spending time amongst Lions… but don’t just take our word for it, come to Africa and witness this incredibly special species for yourself.
Visiting Africa responsibly is what we are all about, it’s a passion for our team to ensure we provide amazing experiences whilst operating in a way that your money goes to genuine tourism conservation efforts, which ultimately help save species such as Lions. We appreciate your help in this.
So here we go…
Duba Plains Camp | Okavango Delta, Botswana
Recently rebuilt, Duba Plains is somewhat of a legendary safari camp, renowned for the local Lion versus Buffalo encounters featured in the wildlife films of Dereck & Beverly Joubert. The area is also superb for elephants and leopard also. The land and water based landscape means a very different approach to safari and a unique Lion behaviour to witness.
Governors Camp | Maasai Mara, Kenya
Set in the heart of the Maasai Mara, nestled by the Mara River – Governors Camp is famous as being base camp for the BBC television series Big Cat Diary. Here you’ll find Legendary Lions, with royal bloodlines of world famous cats as featured in the TV programme. Many documentaries are still filed in this area and it’s no wonder why… magnificent Lions old and new.
Namiri Plains Camp | Serengeti, Tanzania
You won’t find many tourists in Namiri, having been closed for 20 years to allow the local Cheetah population to recover. Lions have also been a key feature to this rejuvenated area, featuring in acclaimed National Geographic documentaries and imagery… and they’re beautiful Lions at that. An exclusive safari camp, set in an almost abandoned wilderness of grassy plains and rocky outcrops, providing a very private experience with these cats.
Ulusaba | Sabi Sands, South Africa
South Africa’s Sabi Sands is one of the very best destinations to see Leopard, but it’s also an area known for great Lions – from prides with those cute Cubs, to infamous coalitions of banded brother – Lions in the Sabi Sands is a very unique experience. Ulusaba (Sir Richard Branson’s Private Game Reserve) isn’t simply a name, is a way of safari – expert guiding, beautiful rooms, with guests treated as part of the family… all set in an enchanting wildlife area.
Lion Camp | South Luangwa, Zambia
The name says it all. Lion Camp and their expert guides were recently showcased in the British documentary series Lion Country – which followed the South Luangwa Lion prides (including the battle hardened Hollywood pride), their way of life, ordeals and adventures of young Cubs at play and learning. Lion Camp is currently being completely rebuilt and will re-open in May 2018 (booking now).
Shumba Camp | Kafue National Park, Zambia
“Some of the best Lion viewing in Africa” describes Shumba Camp operator Wilderness Safaris and it’s no wonder why. Another area featured in various nature documentaries covering the Lion interactions, similar to Botswana’s Okavango Delta, Lions here have a marsh to contend with, meaning their size is slightly larger than other areas of Africa due to the terrain. Busanga Plains is that marsh and it’s here that your twice daily game drives will venture for a dream of a safari.
