Saruni Samburu’s six luxury, eco-chic villas are open and spacious, heralding spectacular views over Kalama Conservancy and Mount Kenya. As the only lodge in over 200,000 acres of unspoiled wilderness teeming with wildlife to explore exclusively, and guided by Samburu warriors passionate about their land and culture, the safari experience at Saruni Samburu is intimate and truly exceptional.
Guides: Saruni Samburu are proud of their guides and the trackers. They belong to the Kalama community and know intimately the land and the animals, the weather and the roads (or how to get around where there are no roads), the people and the natural elements. Being on safari with a Samburu professional guide means that you will not only encounter more animals, but you will learn how to read the book of nature through their eyes. It’s the beginning of a friendship that, for many guests, lasts well beyond the duration of the safari.
On Safari: Days are normally hot, dry and sunny: the wildlife of Samburu is best seen during the early hours or late hours of the day, but during the central hours of the day there is a great concentration of animals along the river and no tourists. So your guide will take you there to have an unforgettable experience. Also recommended are night game drives, when the nocturnal species can be seen. The lodge also love to take you to secret spots, especially for bush dinner, or to the river for a picnic lunch that allows us to be with elephants, waterbuck, lion, impala, giraffe all the Samburu species that go and drink water. If you are passionate about birds, species are abundant in Samburu, but the birds are very tame and can be easily spotted and photographed.
Game drives, night game drives, guided bush walks, bird watching, cultural village visits, bush meals, sundowners, 2 large infinity pools, visits to local caves with rock art, Samburu wellbeing space, warriors academy for children, trekking excursions, helicopter/bi-plane excursions available on request, gift shop.
Saruni Mara is the only small, boutique lodge in the Mara, with five elegant cottages, one family villa and one private villa. The lodge is nestled in a secluded valley in the heart of the most exciting wilderness in Africa: Mara North Conservancy – an exclusive, private wildlife concession bordering the world-renowned Masai Mara National Reserve. Maasai warriors guide you throughout, sharing their ancient wisdom of the area and animals and their fascinating way of life.
Guides: all guides carry very high standards and are all members of the Kenya Professional Safari Guides Association and their personalities, together with their knowledge, will ensure you have a memorable experience. Saruni Camps supports the Koyiaki Guiding School project and is encouraging and supporting young Maasai in their ambition to become top level safari guides.
On Safari: there’s no rush while on safari and there will be time to observe the wild animals, to see how they interact and to study their behaviour and their habitats. Days can be hot or cold, sunny or rainy but the wildlife of the Masai Mara is always in action. We will not only take to the famous spots but also to the secret corners where you never meet another vehicle.
We’d love to take you to our secret spots, especially for bush dinner or bush lunch. Deep in the forest or by the river Mara overlooking a “hippo beach”, a nicely decorated table is waiting for us, providing us with the thrilling experience of a gourmet meal in the middle of the bush.
If you are passionate about birds, we are more than happy to help you identify new species among the 500 plus that live in the Mara.
Wildlife is most active either early in the morning or in the late afternoon and evening. These are the two magic moments of a safari. After dawn, the light is perfect for photography and the sounds of the African bush start filling the air.
